Treating Pain From Pumping

How can I ease the pain?

If your breasts are hurting from pumping, here are a few steps you should take to minimize your discomfort:

  • Start by checking the size of the flange against the size of your nipple. Most companies make various sizes and textures of flanges. Change yours to a better fitting size if you are experiencing this problem.
  • Place a small amount of nipple cream or ointment into the flange where the nipple and/or areola touch the plastic portion. This should minimize the friction caused during your pumping session.
  • Observe the settings your pump is operating on. Try lowering the pressure setting, especially during the start of the pumping session. As time goes by, you may be able to increase the pressure slowly and gently.
  • Most nipple pain will resolve within 24 to 48 hours of starting a new regimen. Over-the-counter medication such as acetaminophen and ibuprofen will also help control your pain. Follow label instructions for dosage and timing of these medications, and speak with your healthcare provider, physician, midwife or lactation consultant for additional information on medications while breastfeeding.
