Pain Meds While Nursing
What do I do if I need pain medication while breastfeeding?
Some situations require stronger pain relief for mom, including prescription meds. A few things to remember:
- Nurse the baby before taking medication
- The “Golden Rule:” Do not pump and dump your milk!
If you need to take any pain meds, make sure you discuss options with your healthcare provider to find the best choice for you and baby. Continue to reduce your dosage little by little as you recover. If you can, try to avoid narcotic pain meds and talk to your healthcare provider about taking non-narcotic pain relievers instead, such as acetaminophen and ibuprofen.
